For those of you that lived or worked in the city of North Miami during the seventies and the eighties you will remember the huge Italian population and the three wonderful Italian grocery stores that serviced the wonderful residents: Lorenzos Market, Rippy's, and Dominion Foods.
Dominion Foods was one of three food stores (see soul food page) owned by my father and mother; Moe and Lila Farrow. Dad wasn't Italian by birth, but he was Italian in his heart; he loved the people, the music and most of all the food. Northern Italian, Southern Italian, New York Italian and Chicago Italian; if it was Italian food he savored it.
Eating Italian food wasn't enough. Dad studied Italian cuisine and cooked for us, and his passion led to a vary successful food business. At one time we were the second largest retail wine store in Miami Dade County following only Lorenzo's Market in volume of bottles sold. We produced for sale a thousand pounds of sweet and hot Italian Sausage every week. Our dry shelves were stocked with olive oils, vinegars, pasta, olives, pepperoni and much more. Our refrigerated shelves were stocked with ricotta, provolone, hot sopressata, ricotta, and salata/mizithra.
Carrying on the tradition of working with Italian foods, our son Bryan worked for Johnny Geez catering restaurant on Sheridan Street Cooper City. Due to the economy Johnny Geez closed their restaurant this year. It will be missed.
Due to Dad's passing in 1987, we closed Dominion Food Store because of the long hours, a greedy landlord, and a neighborhood that was changing from Italian demographics to a Caribbean population. We didn't have the right products or the cultural knowledge at the time to service the customer base. Since that time we have learned (much to our excitement) the wonderful world of Caribbean and Latin cuisine in South Florida.
